There is something extraordinary about photographing this chapter of a family’s story.
For this Malibu maternity photography session, the Pacific coastline gave us everything we could have hoped for—warm golden light, an open horizon, dramatic clouds, and a sunset that transformed by the minute.
But the landscape was only part of the story.
This session was about celebrating the anticipation of becoming parents and creating photographs that feel larger than a single afternoon. Rather than approaching maternity photography as a collection of traditional poses, I wanted these images to feel cinematic, intimate, and intentionally composed—portraits that could live on a wall as pieces of art.
Malibu offers an incredible setting for maternity portraits because of its simplicity.
The ocean, sand, mountains, and enormous California sky allow the people in the photograph to remain the focus. As the sun begins to descend over the Pacific, the entire character of the coastline changes.
We began with warmer, brighter portraits that celebrated the mother-to-be against the glowing Malibu sunset. As the evening progressed, the sky became increasingly dramatic, giving us an opportunity to create something completely different.
The result is a maternity gallery that moves between softness and drama, intimacy and scale.
My approach to maternity photography is heavily influenced by the same principles I bring to wedding photography: light, composition, environment, emotion, and intentional storytelling.
I don’t want every photograph to look or feel the same.
Sometimes the most powerful image is a quiet portrait of an expecting mother. Other times, I step farther back and allow the landscape, sky, and light to become part of the composition.
That is exactly what happened during this Malibu session.
The enormous sunset became more than a background—it became part of the photograph itself.
The goal is to create something beautiful today that becomes even more meaningful years from now.
Timing is incredibly important for a beach maternity photoshoot.
We intentionally photographed around golden hour and sunset, giving us several different qualities of natural light within one session.
Earlier in the evening, the warm California sun created glowing portraits along the shoreline. As sunset approached, deeper tones began appearing across the sky and ocean. That transition allowed us to move from classic maternity portraits into more dramatic, cinematic compositions.
Those final minutes of light are often some of my favorites.
You cannot completely predict what the California coast will give you—and that’s part of what makes photographing Malibu so special.
While maternity portraits naturally celebrate the mother-to-be, I also love bringing both parents into the story.
There is something incredibly meaningful about photographing a couple during this brief season before their family changes forever.
The gestures don’t need to be complicated.
A hand resting on her belly. Standing together against the ocean. A quiet look between two people who know their lives are about to become very different.
Those small moments become part of the family’s history.
For beach maternity photography, wardrobe can dramatically influence the final photographs.
Neutral and lighter colors photograph beautifully against Malibu’s sand, ocean, and warm sunset tones. Long dresses can also introduce movement when there is a coastal breeze, while simpler silhouettes allow the landscape and expecting mother to remain the visual focus.
Most importantly, your wardrobe should still feel like you.
Before a session, we can discuss wardrobe, location, timing, and the overall visual direction so the photographs feel cohesive rather than simply showing up at the beach and hoping for beautiful light.
Pregnancy is such a temporary chapter.
Your child will eventually see these photographs differently than you do today. They’ll see their parents waiting for them. They’ll see what life looked like before they arrived. They’ll see how deeply they were already loved.
That’s what makes maternity photography so meaningful to me.
These aren’t simply photographs of pregnancy.
They’re the beginning of someone’s story.
If you’re looking for a Malibu maternity photographer or Los Angeles maternity photographer with an artistic, cinematic approach, I would love to create something personal for you.

PLAN YOUR MATERNITY SESSION
Many maternity sessions are photographed during the later stages of pregnancy when the baby bump is beautifully defined while the mother-to-be is still comfortable enough for a portrait session. Every pregnancy is different, so we can plan timing around what feels best for you.
Malibu offers a variety of coastal environments, including sandy beaches, rocky shorelines, cliffs, mountain views, and open ocean landscapes. The specific location can be selected based on accessibility, lighting, tides, privacy, and the visual style you’re looking for.
For the warm, cinematic look shown in this gallery, I typically plan around golden hour and sunset. The changing light gives us the opportunity to create several different moods during one session.
Absolutely. I encourage couples portraits during maternity sessions. The experience is about documenting this chapter of your family’s story, not simply creating individual maternity portraits.
Yes. Sessions can be created throughout Los Angeles and Southern California, depending on the location and concept.
